Syracuse is a city located in Otoe County, Nebraska. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,762.  It is a second class city incorporated in 1871.  The current mill levy is .43391.  It is governed by a mayor and council.

Geography
Syracuse is located at 40°39'31" North, 96°10'60" West (40.658626, -96.183207).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there are 1,762 people, 754 households, and 496 families residing in the city. The population density is 723.7/km² (1,878.7/mi²). There are 798 housing units at an average density of 327.8/km² (850.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.92% White, 0.00% African American, 0.06% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.51% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 0.57% of the populations are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 754 households out of which 24.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 4.9% have a female households with no husband present, and 34.1% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 22.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.77.

In the city the population is spread out with 20.9% under the age of 18, 5.6% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 17.6% from 45 to 64, and 33.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 46 years. For every 100 females there are 84.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 79.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $37,112, and the median income for a family is $48,021. Males have a median income of $31,900 versus $22,413 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,974. 5.7% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.9% of those under the age of 18 and 7.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
